6 Ways To Create Space in A Small Room

Small rooms can be hard to decorate. They are often strangely shaped, lack floor space, and sometimes have low ceilings that make it impossible to showcase tall houseplants or display cases. If you’re in a slump and unsure of how to furnish your closet-sized room, look no further- here are a few great ways to create space in tiny rooms.

Mirror, mirror on the wall.

One of the easiest ways to make a small room feel spacious is by adding a mirror or two (or four?). By reflecting light, images, and color, mirrors work wonders to make even the smallest room seem double its actual size. One great strategy is to place a large mirror in an area of the room where it is able to reflect the scenery from a window or the view of another room in the house.

Frugal furnishing.

It can be tempting to cram a small room full of comfy furniture and turn it into a haven perfect for relaxation, however, if you’re trying to make a small room look larger, skip the extra arm chair. Instead of cramming the room full of bulky furniture, stick with one or two exceptionally comfortable pieces of furniture. This is the same for wall decoration- choose a few statement pieces of wall art and don’t overdo it. Too many wall decorations can make a already small room feel as if its closing in on itself.

Light, white, and clean.

Painting is a simple way to make small rooms feel larger, as well. However, dark colors such as maroon, browns, and deep purples and reds actually make rooms appear smaller. Instead of a dark color, opt for a light, airy color that reflects light. A few good color ideas are white, off-white, eggshell, beige, and light rainbow colors (blue, pink, purple, green).

Transparent and tricky.

As a general rule of thumb, see-through objects such as coffee tables, appear to take up less space, making small rooms seem more open and larger than they actually are. Glass-top tables are ideal for this, as they practically disappear when placed in front of large pieces of furniture. Not to mention that they also look stylish and interesting!

Elevation elation.

Small rooms tend to need a lot of added storage space. Generally, this space come sin the form of cabinets and shelving, which makes the room seem even smaller. Remedy this by switching your floor-dwelling shelves and cabinetry units for pieces that can be mounted on the wall and elevated off of the floor, giving the illusion of more floor space.

Point of interest.

Showcasing your favorite, Picasso-esque painting or hand-carved figurine is a good way to draw the eye to a specific location in the room. Although it doesn’t seem like a focal point would do much good at upscaling the size of a room, it really does! The point of interest doesn’t make the room itself appear larger, however, it does draw the eye in and make the viewer forget the size of the room.
